In a major disaster, high winds, rising floodwaters, debris or damaged roads can prevent emergency services from reaching you.
Your community could be isolated and essential services disrupted for up to three days or more. During a large scale event emergency services will focus on assisting the most vulnerable in the community.
You may not have immediate access to support and will need to rely on the supplies and equipment you have on hand at home.
If you were isolated right now, would you be prepared? Follow the steps to prepare:
Premier Anna Bligh has launched a plan to use the State’s resources to fuel the education of the next generation of Queenslanders. The Premier released From Mines to Minds: A proposal to establish a Queensland Education Trust which paper proposes the establishment of a the Queensland Education Trust using 50% of future LNG royalties – projected at more than $1.8 billion in the next 10 years alone.
The Government’s proposed trust could be invested in different ways including; Individual Trust Accounts for Education or a Dedicated Education Fund. Under the Trust account model every Queensland child born on or after July 1, 2012 would receive a savings endowment at birth that could be accessed at age 18. Under the second option the QET would invest in an education ‘future fund’ for activites such as tertiary scholarships for regional and disadvantaged students, international exchange programs or language programs.
Legislation has been introduced into State Parliament that will allow for the Queen’s Birthday public holiday to be shifted to October and create a one-off Queen’s Diamond Jubilee holiday in June 2012.
The changes also create extra public holidays for workers when Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day fall on weekends. We will also amend student-free days so that the Easter state school holidays can be extended to two weeks.
The changes were subject to consultation and the overwhelming majority of respondents supported the changes. For more info on school term dates click here.

Year 7 joins high school from 2015
This change is part of an exciting 10-year journey of reform.
It follows the successful introduction of a Prep year in 2007. In 2008 the entry age for Year 1 was raised by six months, bringing Queensland into line with other states.
From 2015 Year 7 will become the first year of high school in Queensland. Moving Year 7 is a significant reform that will benefit students at all Queensland schools.
