Premier Anna Bligh Announces Election Date - March 24

Premier Anna Bligh has set the date for the State election as March 24 - almost exactly three years since she became the first elected female Premier in Australia on March 21, 2009.

The government would enter caretaker mode on February 19 and would seek to move the upcoming local government elections to late April or early May. The Premier made the unprecedented announcement after receiving a request from the Floods Commission of Inquiry for an extension of time until the 16th of March to complete their work.

Ms Bligh explained that it had been her intention to call the state election for a March 3 or 10 poll date - after the COI report had been due for release, giving the public the opportunity to consider the report and the responses of the major parties to the recommendations. It is not now possible to do that without denying Queenslanders the opportunity to consider the Commission of Inquiry Report.

Further information as the Electoral Commission releases it.

Stepping up for Local Trainers

>

I recently reignited calls to keep thoroughbred training at Deagon Racecourse following an announcement by Racing Queensland Limited (RQL) that could see a proposal to build greyhound racing facilities on the site scrapped. Ms Darling said the announcement today by RQL was sensible and shows the organisation is finally listening to the Deagon community.

Importantly it's an opportunity to take greyhound racing facilities out of the plans and keep the Deagon horse trainers who don't want to be relocated. Deagon Racecourse is steeped in thoroughbred racing tradition, I would like to think that by keeping them on site we preserve a bit of important local history.

I have written to the Racing Minister seeking an assurance that the future of Deagon would be considered in any recommendation put to Government by RQL when considering greyhound racing alternatives. I will be organising a meeting with local trainers and inviting the Minister and RQL to come along and hear why hard-working people like Pat Duff (featured in this video) and Steele Ryan should be allowed to stay put and continue to ply their trade.

I thank residents for their passion and commitment to protecting the amenity of our local area. For my full statement and more information please click here.

Mines to Minds - QLD Education Trust

Premier Anna Bligh has launched a plan to use the State’s resources to fuel the education of the next generation of Queenslanders. The Premier released From Mines to Minds: A proposal to establish a Queensland Education Trust which paper proposes the establishment of a the Queensland Education Trust using 50% of future LNG royalties – projected at more than $1.8 billion in the next 10 years alone.

The Government’s proposed trust could be invested in different ways including; Individual Trust Accounts for Education or a Dedicated Education Fund. Under the Trust account model every Queensland child born on or after July 1, 2012 would receive a savings endowment at birth that could be accessed at age 18. Under the second option the QET would invest in an education ‘future fund’ for activites such as tertiary scholarships for regional and disadvantaged students, international exchange programs or language programs.
